What is white-label Shopify development?

White-label Shopify development is an arrangement in which an outside team builds a Shopify store that a marketing, SEO, or design agency sells to its own client and delivers under the agency's own brand. The client signs with the agency, pays the agency, and sees the agency's name on the finished store. The development team builds the theme, the catalog, and the checkout, then stays out of the relationship entirely.

Short version

we build the store, you sell it, your client never hears our name.

Not to be confused with

the Shopify Partner directory (agencies that build under their own name and take direct credit) or a bought Theme Store template (a starting point, not a finished build).

// how it works

The mechanics, in four steps

step 1

The agency briefs the partner

A product list, brand assets, or a finished Figma file. The tier and delivery date are confirmed before the agency commits a date to its own client.

step 2

The partner builds on a dev store

Theme, catalog, and checkout are built and tested on a private Shopify dev store, never on the client's live domain. A deposit typically starts the work.

step 3

The agency reviews first

A private preview link, seen by the agency before its client ever does. Revisions happen here, not in front of the end client.

step 4

The agency delivers under its own brand

The store goes live on the client's domain, payment-ready and credited to the agency. The agency receives the admin and access; the development team disappears from the story.

White-label Shopify vs. the terms it gets confused with

  • White-label vs. the Shopify Partner directory The Partner directory lists studios that build for clients under their own name and are publicly credited for the work. White-label is structured the opposite way: only the reselling agency's brand ever reaches the client. A studio can hold Partner status and still offer white-label builds to other agencies at the same time.
  • White-label vs. a Theme Store purchase Buying a theme is a starting template the agency still has to configure: catalog, checkout, taxes, shipping, brand customization. White-label Shopify development is the full build delivered finished, not a template handed over half-done.
  • White-label vs. subcontracting Practically the same arrangement. "White-label" stresses that the client never learns who really built the store; "subcontracting" is the broader business term for hiring anyone outside to do part of a job.
  • White-label vs. a freelance hire A freelancer is typically one person, engaged directly, sometimes visible to the end client. A white-label partner is a standing arrangement with a team, structured specifically so the client never has direct contact with whoever built the store.

// who uses it

Three recurring types of buyer

Marketing & SEO agencies

They run the ads and the brand; the store is the one piece they'd rather not build by hand. White-label lets them resell the storefront and keep the campaign performing.

Brand & design studios

Finished identity and product photography, no one to turn it into a working Shopify store. A white-label partner builds to the brand and hands it back to present as the studio's own.

Dropshipping operators

Need a storefront live fast and clean: product import, supplier connections, and a checkout ready to sell, on a fixed price and a published timeline.

The questions people actually ask

What is white-label Shopify development?

An arrangement in which an outside team builds a Shopify store that a marketing, SEO, or design agency sells to its own client and delivers under the agency's own brand. The client signs with the agency, pays the agency, and sees the agency's name on the finished store; the development team writes the theme and the catalog, then stays out of the relationship entirely.

How is white-label Shopify development different from the Shopify Partner directory?

The Shopify Partner directory lists agencies that build under their own name and take direct credit for client work. White-label is the opposite arrangement: the reselling agency's brand is the only one the end client ever sees, and the development team is contractually invisible. A studio can be a Shopify Partner and still offer white-label builds to other agencies at the same time; the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Is white-label Shopify development the same as using a pre-built theme from the Shopify Theme Store?

No. Buying a theme from the Shopify Theme Store gets a template your agency still has to configure, customize, and connect to a catalog and checkout. White-label Shopify development means an outside team does that full build, theme customization, catalog, checkout, tax and shipping setup, and hands the finished store to the agency to sell as its own.

Who typically uses a white-label Shopify development partner?

Three recurring types: marketing and SEO agencies whose clients want to sell online but don't want to own the build, brand and design studios with a finished identity and no one to turn it into a working store, and dropshipping operators who need a storefront live fast on a fixed price and timeline.

Does the client ever find out who actually built the store?

Not if the partner is doing it correctly. A proper white-label Shopify build ships with no credits or signatures anywhere in the theme or admin, an NDA on request, and zero direct contact between the development team and the agency's client. The Shopify admin is transferred to the agency at handoff.

What does white-label Shopify development typically cost?

Pricing is normally per project rather than a retainer, and scales with catalog size and functionality: a basic branded theme, or a premium build with a custom homepage. NexaWebDev gives the price on a short call once the catalog and features are known, then writes it into the quote with the delivery date.
