How to choose a web design agency: six questions to ask before you sign

Most agency websites look the same, so the website cannot tell you much. The questions you ask before signing can. These six cover who does the work, what you can see first, what you own, and what happens after launch.

Six questions to ask a web design agency

Three checks you can run in ten minutes

Web agency or freelancer: which one?

Both can build a good site. The difference that matters is not headcount. It is what happens when something goes wrong: who answers, what is written down, and whether the project survives one person getting sick or busy.

What should make you hesitate

We are a small studio of two partners, so we take on the number of projects we can deliver, and we tell you if the calendar is full rather than keep you waiting. Whether we are the right fit is for you to decide after you have seen the work. If you want to compare, read how a project runs with our web agency in Montréal, and how to compare website quotes.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a web agency and a freelancer?

The useful difference is what gets written down, not headcount. A good freelancer can do excellent work. Whoever you choose, ask for the scope, the date, the amount and the ownership terms in writing. We are two partners registered as NexaWebDev S.E.N.C., so the project does not depend on a single person being reachable.

Should I pick a Montréal agency or a cheaper offshore one?

It depends on what you value. A Montréal studio works in French natively, deals with Quebec's Law 25 consent rules by default, and gives you a contract under local law. If the lowest price is your only criterion, you will find cheaper elsewhere, and we do not claim to win that comparison.

How long does a website take?

It depends on the scope, and the date is written into the quote before work starts. It also depends on how quickly text, images and approvals arrive on your side.

Do I need to meet in person?

Most projects scope out well by email, phone and video call. Our business address is 770 Rue Notre-Dame Ouest in Montréal, and a meeting can be arranged if your project calls for it.

Can an agency promise me search rankings or leads?

No honest one can. Search results and lead counts depend on many things outside a studio's control. What a studio can promise is the work itself: a fast, clear, correctly built site, delivered on the date in the contract.

A 15-minute call with the two people who build the site. Bring the list, we go through it together. Or see a free preview of your own site first, and only talk to us if you like what you see.
